One Stamp, Two Looks: Bring Your Stamps to Life with Shadow Stamping!

PHOTO 1: Close-up view of shadow stamping, with one stamp!

Hi crafty friends! Shadow Stamping is one of those fun techniques that instantly makes your cards feel fresh and interesting. With just one stamp and a simple twist—using the back of the stamp for a soft shadow—you can create two beautiful looks from the same image!

SHADOW STAMPING WITH ONE STAMP

  • Choose any SYMMETRICAL photopolymer (clear) stamp.
    • For example, imagine a line down the center of the stamp- the image will be equal on both sides.

  • Ink the BACK (flat part) of the stamp to create the shadow.
    • White Craft Ink is perfect for this… it works with any color cardstock and ink for universal use. It’s an opaque ink, so when you stamp the next step -regardless of how dark the cardstock you’re using- the ink color shows up!
    • Use a stamping platform to repeat stamp the shadow and build up the ink- especially helpful with white ink!
    • After stamping, allow the ink to fully dry (or make it dry with a Heat Tool on low) before moving to the final stamping.
    • Savvy Tip: If the image on the reverse shows through, affecting the uniformity of the ink creating the shadow, simply add a little more ink with a Sponge Dauber. I found this on the large stamps mostly, but it’s an easy fix!

  • Stamp the image (like normal) over the shadow using the front of the same stamp.
PHOTO 3: Another card example featuring the Delicate Pines & Falling Snow Stamps! The images were stamped with Real Red Ink, but they dried pink (color lesson: red + white = pink!) 🙂

If you love discovering new ways to use the supplies you already own, enjoy giving shadow stamping a try during your next crafty play time.
