Hi crafty friends! Looking for a fun and easy way to brighten someone’s special day? Send sunny birthday wishes with this cheerful beach-themed card made using the Notes & Totes Bundle by Stampin’ Up!®
In this week’s tutorial, I’ll show you how to create a handmade birthday card that brings a splash of seaside charm to your greetings. It’s a stepped-up, fun-fold version of the popular quick & easy beach-themed cards I shared a couple weeks ago… choose your favorite or make them all!
Let’s wade in and create something that’s sure to make your family and friends smile!
Card Base: 8-1/2″ x 5-1/2″. On Paper Trimmer, place on long side and score at 4-1/4″ and 2-1/8″, fold into Z (see 2nd & 3rd photos below)
Front Panel: 3-1/2″ x 5″, cut with second-from-largest Textured Notes Die on Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine
BASIC WHITE CARDSTOCK
Arch Layers: (2) 3″ x 4-1/4″
On one panel, apply Lemon Lolly Classic Ink to top third with a Blending Brush; repeat at top with Flirty Flamingo Classic ink to create the look of a sunny sky (photo above). Set the 2nd layer aside.
Inside Sentiment Panel: 4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″
Cut with largest Textured Notes Die on Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine
Accents: On scraps, with Notes & Totes Dies, cut one each shellfish, starfish, sunscreen and sunglasses; color as desired.
Coloring Shown with Stampin’ Blends Combo Markers: Shellfish-Petal Pink; Starfish-Medium Light; Sunglasses (solid part of die-cut)-Black
POOL PARTY TWO-TONE CARDSTOCK – We’re taking advantage of the white core and two-tone shades of this reversable paper to create the look of ocean waves!
‘Ocean Waves’ for Arched Panel: 3″ x 6″
Starting at the top on the 3″ side, tear horizontally towards you. Flip the paper over and move down about an inch, repeat by tearing horizontally toward you. Repeat this until you have five alternating pieces. (see photo below)
Starting with the first piece, glue to ink blended cardstock. Apply the next piece in order, until all five pieces are adhered… note the colors alternate between light and dark.
SAVVY TIPS: Place glue below the torn edges, so you can easily tuck in the shellfish and roll the edges back. Keep the arch die close at hand as you place each piece to insure they all fit within the die before you make the cut.
With the fifth-from-largest Everyday Arches Die, cut both arch layers on the Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine. You made need to go back and forth in the machine a couple times with the decorated panel, due to it’s thickness.
ADD DIMENSION WITHOUT BULK! Glue the second panel behind the decorated panel to add depth and shadow, but without the thickness of foam adhesive.
Accents: With Notes & Totes Dies, cut one each sunglasses (frame) and lotion bottle
WOVEN TEXTURES DESIGNER PAPER: On Paper Trimmer, cut a 4″ x 5-3/8″ piece, then cut on short side at 2″ for (2) 2″ x 5-3/8″ pieces… it’s a savvy way to get the exact length on both pieces!
STAMP
Temporarily place arched panel on [Crumb Cake] front panel to determine placement of the front sentiment; remove and stamp sentiment from Notes & Totes Bundle with Memento Tuxedo Black Ink.
Stamp sentiment on inside sentiment panel [The Right Words].
With Lemon Lolly Classic Ink, stamp sun on scrap piece of Basic White Cardstock; cut by hand with Paper Snips. Also stamp sun on die-cut sunscreen tube, then use remaining ink on Blending Brush to lightly add color so it stands out against the white background.
With Flirty Flamingo Classic Ink, stamp hibiscus on lotion bottle.
ASSEMBLE
Adhere inside sentiment panel, then designer paper on both sides of the Z-fold (see photo above)
Fold Z closed and adhere the front panel to the top Z-fold (adhesive will only be on the left side of the panel); center front panel to the inside sentiment panel. Adhere arched panel.
Adhere the accent pieces to the front; adhere the inside pieces, making sure to place them behind the folded Z-panel so they’re hidden until the card is opened.
EMBELLISH
With Wink of Stella Clear Shimmer, brush on the torn white edges of “ocean waves”, as well as the starfish, shellfish, sun and sunglasses
With your fingers, roll the torn edges of the ‘ocean waves’ down in a few spots to add even more interest… done!
Whether you’re crafting for a friend who loves the beach or just want to add a touch of sunshine to your cardmaking, the Notes & Totes Stamp & Die Bundle will be your new go-to toy for summer crafting!
